Writing for the Ear

Listening to an audio segment is easy

In the hustle and bustle of today’s society, we are always on the go. Nobody has the time to dreamily glance out their window and listen to a podcast or an audiobook. The most significant advantage of audio content is that you can bring it on the go or while you are completing a mindless activity.

Types of audio content

There are two types of popular audio content; podcasts and audiobooks. Podcasts are usually shorter and can be anywhere from 5 minutes to over an hour. Audiobooks are generally over 5 hours long and only feature the narrator’s voice. Podcasts typically include other content besides the speakers, such as music, soundbites, interviews, or sound effects.

The most significant difference between the two is the commitment. Since podcasts are so short, there is no considerable commitment toward the subject matter. For an audiobook, there is careful time and consideration into which book to listen too.

What to include

A producer of a podcast needs to include engaging storytelling, appropriate tone of voice, and compelling elements that keep the listener involved the whole time. Remember, most people are multitasking while listening, so it is essential to keep their attention on the recording.

Engaging storytelling keeps the listener attention the whole time. The listener should be excited to find out what happens next and asks themselves questions about the content.

The tone of voice needs to reflect the correct situation. The listener should not be questioning, why are they yelling, or why are they whispering? When the situation demands intensity, then the listener should hear that reflected in the narrator’s voice.

Using background noise, sound effects, and music can create a pleasant atmosphere that engages the listener to keep their attention on the audio content.

Put it all together

People that are listening to audio content are splitting their attention with another activity. Engaging storytelling, appropriate tone of voice, and compelling elements keep the listener’s attention focused on the audio content.
